Global Thought Leader Spotlight

Darren Goldman, Managing Director & EMsights Capital Group Business Leader, Artisan Partners

As business leader of Artisan Partners’ EMsights Capital Group, I am responsible for business development, consultant relations and client relationship management across the institutional channel. I work with the investment team on product development and strategy, ensuring our portfolios meet the needs of our investors.

The investment backdrop for Emerging Markets debt and other asset classes is drastically different than the environment we have experienced for the past decade or more.

Central bank policies are now fighting inflation, while possibly leading to recessions. However, for many countries, their economies, while being affected by inflation and higher rates, have been coping with the current challenges and some economies are growing. Albeit there are many countries which continue to struggle as well. With stickier inflation than most anticipated, kneejerk market reactions have provided attractive valuations to patient investors. In our view, while markets may be challenging and at times volatile, we may be re-entering a golden age of Emerging Markets investing.

EM debt and currencies remain susceptible to shocks, inflation, geopolitical events and overall investor sentiment. While EM has led a strong recovery since November 2022, it is possible unforeseen events can derail an ongoing recovery. For patient investors who look at the asset class over the long-run, current valuations have historically led to compelling forward returns.

Investing in emerging markets debt provides investors with a wide variety of investment options; from large robust economies to developed ones. From countries with strong institutional pillars to ones which are establishing them for future generations. Emerging markets debt has historically provided investors with low beta and correlation to US Treasuries and the S&P 500, thereby providing an opportunity for diversification.

For investors who are comfortable with investing through potential periods of higher EM specific headline news and market volatility, the current market environment is providing for a multitude of short to long-term investment opportunities in emerging markets debt. The more one steps away from the larger countries which comprise the core of major EM debt benchmarks, correlations are typically lower, and investment opportunities are more interesting in our view.

Darren will be presenting at Global Investment Institute’s upcoming Fixed Income & Alternatives Investment Forum, taking place on Thursday, 7 September 2023 at the Westin Melbourne, Victoria.
