Neuberger Berman (NB) Private Markets has been an active and successful private equity investor since 1987 [1]. NB Private Markets manages over US$100 billion [2] of investor commitments across fund and direct investments. With over 2,400 deals reviewed and US$15+ billion [3] committed across primaries, secondaries and private credit in 2021 alone, NB Private Market’s deep and integrated global platform is highly selective and invests across strategies, asset classes and geographies on behalf of its clients.

The team manages US$17 billion in direct private, most recently announcing the final close of NB Private Debt Fund IV, raising US$8.1 billion and exceeding its original US$5 billion target.

Matthew Bird, Head of Investments, Neuberger Berman

Matthew Bird is the Head of Investments and a member of Neuberger Berman’s Private Debt Investment Committee.

Prior to joining Neuberger Berman, Matthew was a vice president at GarMark Partners, one of the longest-tenured managers of private junior capital in North America, where he was responsible for sourcing, executing and monitoring middle-market debt and structured equity investments across multiple industries. He served as a board member or observer at several portfolio companies.

Prior to joining GarMark, he was an asset manager at Seavest Inc., an investment management firm focused on healthcare real estate and private equity investing. Before that, he was an investment professional at FG II Ventures, a private venture firm, and at European Capital Ventures plc, a London-based venture capital fund.

Matthew received an MBA with Honors from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA, cum laude, in History and French from the University of Warwick.

William Proctor, Head of Sponsor Coverage, Managing Director, Member of Private Credit Invesment Team, Neuberger Berman

Will Proctor is the Head of Sponsor Coverage and a Managing Director of Neuberger Berman. He is a member of the Private Credit investment team with a focus on deal origination.

Prior to joining NB Alternative Advisers LLC in 2016, Will delivered unique Neuberger Berman investment strategies to a broad client base including individuals, family offices, foundations, and endowments.

Before joining Neuberger Berman in 2012, Will was responsible for the marketing and fundraising efforts at Glaxis Capital Management, LLC, a global-macro, absolute return hedge fund based in Sarasota, Florida. While at Glaxis, Will worked with various client types including ultra-high net worth individuals and a range of institutional investors. Prior to joining Glaxis, Will was a professional athlete, playing in the Canadian Football League where he won the 2008 Grey Cup Championship with the Calgary Stampeders.

Will received his BS from Clemson University where he was the starting quarterback and a captain of the football team.

Michael Schwartz, Investment Committee Member, Private Debt, Neuberger Berman

Michael Schwartz is a member of Neuberger Berman’s Private Debt Investment Committee.

Prior to joining Neuberger Berman in 2016, Michael was a Senior Vice President at Fifth Street Asset Management, where he was responsible for structuring, executing and monitoring directly originated and syndicated middle-market debt investments throughout the capital structure and across multiple industries. Prior to that, Michael was with Ares Management as an Associate in the Private Debt Group evaluating debt investments across multiple industries.

Michael began his career at Invesco Ltd., analysing leverage loan and high yield investments in technology, media and telecom companies, as a member of the Bank Loan Group.

Michael received a BS in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University.
