Tyler and Spencer are both Portfolio Managers within J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s Private Equity Group (PEG), which has more than 40 years of dedicated private equity investing experience and US$33 billion in assets under management.

The private equity group manages more than 250 active GP relationships and has executed 1,300+ deals since its establishment in 1980 across various investment types. PEG’s solutions focus on the small to mid-market and pursue the achievement of outsized returns relative to large and mega markets.

Expanding accessibility to private equity investing

Private equity has historically only been offered to large institutional investors and ultra-high net worth families given the large minimum investment requirements, stringent investor eligibility, and high operational hurdles. This is changing in the current market landscape.

High-quality managers with decades of experience have begun to offer evergreen entry points to their platforms, thus making private equity exposure more accessible at lower minimums, with more reasonable investor eligibility standards, and simplified operations (monthly subscriptions, quarterly repurchases, and increased transparency).

The rise of private equity vs public equity

With companies staying private for longer and many established companies being taken private, the public equity universe is dwindling.

Between 1997 and 2022, the number of publicly listed companies has fallen by over 40% in the US and by over 60% in the UK. Consequently, public equity now represents only 15% of the total equity universe, with private equity comprising the remaining 85%.

Private equity’s potential for enhanced returns

By investing in private companies, particularly at earlier stages, private equity firms capture the growth and value creation of these businesses in a way that is not available through public markets. This ability to invest in high-potential, fast growing businesses before they go public is a key driver of private equity’s potential for enhanced returns.
