In my role as the Senior Vice President and the Head of the Global Quantitative Equity team at Mackenzie Investments, I oversee the management of US$8 billion in assets. After joining in 2017, I helped launch the global quantitative equity boutique and set its investment philosophy. In my 30 years in the industry, I have managed long-only, long-short, extension and low-volatility quantitative portfolios, primarily for institutional investors.

During my tenured career, I have seen much change, which is particularly pronounced in the current environment with technological advancements that encompass innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning and natural language processing, all of which have the potential to uncover hidden opportunities across the investment landscape.

At the same time, economic trends such as inflation, interest rates and geopolitical tensions stand to have a direct impact on market performance, as well as investor sentiment.

The increasing focus on sustainability across the institutional investor community is reshaping how they look at investment opportunities, by factoring in ESG considerations into their broader investment decision-making process.

In recent times, we have seen quantitative managers move towards a more holistic approach, one that encompasses the key considerations that investors have front of mind, in contrast to the former, which placed a strong emphasis on value.

Implications for Institutional Investors

Investors should consider AI incorporated or empowered investment strategies to diversify their existing portfolios. The application of AI may enable investors to identify uncorrelated investment signals and hidden investment insights.

Furthermore, holistic core strategies that aim to add value across different market environments should be a consideration for institutional investor portfolios, given the market environment faced.

It is also important that investors executing ESG integrated investment strategies maintain a strong risk return profile across their portfolios.

Arup will be presenting at Global Investment Institute’s upcoming Equities Investment Forum, taking place on Wednesday, 11 September 2024 at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, Victoria.
